Guide to Strapping Machines

Guide to Strapping Machines

Strapping is the most secure and effective way to join parcels or to secure pallets together. In this guide, we'll be focusing on strapping machines that can help your packaging process by simplifying and speeding it up. There are different types of machines available out there, we'll be looking at these types and how to use them, hopefully giving you the understanding needed to decide on one.

Introduction to the Strapping Machine

Strapping has 3 main uses:

  • Pallet strapping
  • Join parcels to each other
  • Offer more strength

Strapping machines are electrically powered and provide secure seals on packages and parcels with durable strapping. Cut down on the time, energy, and material spent on your typical strapping process without needing manual strapping tools such as tensioners, cutters, or combination tools. The operator can set up the strap strength and tension so that the entire process is under control. Consider including a strapping machine into your work process if strapping parcels and shipping is a part of your regular workload.

When it comes to the types of strapping machines there are three types.

  • Automatic Strapping Machine
  • Semi-Automatic Machine
  • Handheld Strapping Machine

When choosing a strapping machine, remember to identify your work requirements first as these machines have different benefits and applications.

If you have a high volume production line, it would be ideal to invest in an automatic strapping machine which has high performance. At 65 straps per minute, a complete automated strapping machine is a worthwhile addition to your production lines. According to the tension level set by the operator, the machine will strap parcels, seal, and cut straps smoothly and efficiently.

For lower volume operations semi-automatic strapping machines are well-suited. Although they are semi-automatic, they can still seal up to 24 straps per minute. So, what makes a semi-automatic different from a fully automatic machine? The difference is that, while tension, seal, and cutting the strapping is carried out in one motion, an operator will have to feed the strapping into the machine manually.

Last but not least is the portable and small in size handheld strapping machines. These easy to handle machines are battery-powered and lightweight making them ideal to strap items in various locations or if you don't have the required space for a large machine. They can be pre-programmed to set the tension strength so that sealing and cutting is performed efficiently.

How Does Strapping Machines Work?

Three types of strapping machines mean that they will work in three different ways. For your convenience, we have described how each of these machines works, so that you'll be fully aware when purchasing a machine for your business.

Automatic Strapping Machines

Once the fully automatic machines are prepared and setup, they are the simplest and quickest to use. Set the required tension and place the parcel on the strapping machine. Simply with the touch of a button, you can begin the automatic strapping process with the strap tensioned and cut by the machine.

Semi-automatic Strapping Machines

Compared to the fully-automatic, the semi-automatics require a moderate operator involvement where the strapping is needed to be fed manually for each parcel. While it takes a little longer than the automatic machine, it is quite a simple process. The parcel which is to be strapped is placed in the right orientation and the operator has to feed the strapping as the machine is engaged and the strapping is tightened according to the set tension. The machine then automatically cuts the strap smoothly.

Handheld Strapping Machines

These handheld and portable devices are easy to operate and work quite differently to their larger counterparts. To operate these handheld devices, the strapping has to be wrapped around the parcel and placed in the machine to get it automatically tightened. The strap will be tensioned and sealed finally. The handheld strapping machines can be used either vertically or horizontally and the tension strength too can be set as preferred on the machine.

A rechargeable Li-ion battery powers the machine, which can take approximately 30-40 minutes to reach a full charge. Depending on the device you use, a single charge is capable of delivering up to 440 strapping cycles.
